Internet Find - Heritage in this Digital Age

Introducing this blog site - been around since 2011 (blogger Don) Was doing some online research on Turua and surrounding area - back in the beginning of the 1900's. This blog is a mix of Scottish heritage, Southland New Zealand and other places. Hence how I landed on:

The Lothians: The Waihou and Ohinemuri River Improvement Scheme, 1911 - 1928 (the-lothians.blogspot.com) accessed 25/10/2022

A great account with photographs of this scheme - thanks blogger Don.

We live in a digital age emphasised with COVID lockdowns around the world and no less National Libraries and museums in New Zealand. No longer was it possible to make physical visits to these places for research and enjoying exhibits on display.

Some over the last few years have made comments such as " Information on the internet is untrue."  "People paid to have their information in that book so is embellished"  All these statements are myths - possibly the outcome of facing new technology with scepticism.

National Library of New Zealand, Auckland War Memorial Museum, Auckland City Council heritage images - kura , Auckland University early New Zealand Books, Archives New Zealand  are  some of the New Zealand websites putting digital records up of books, photos, documents. Nga Tonga Sound and Vision re putting up many of those early films and radio interviews.

Overseas from the comfort of my New Zealand home can look up online Trove and National Maritime Museum Australia.

Even further afield to National Library of Scotland  and the National Maritime Museum   Greenwich, England.

Yes for researchers and writers of history and family history digital opens many new doors of information.

When history and art meet - Crafted in Bronze

Unveiling of Keith Park statue at Thames, NZ 27 April 2019 photo courtesy Chris Ball

The 82nd Battle of Britain Anniversary Commemorations in Thames, NZ on Sunday 11 September 2022 at the Thames Airfield, New Zealand. This bought to mind history of the Battle of Britain and New Zealanders among those in the aerial defence and combat  in the skies over the UK.

Battle of Britain - 10th July – 31st October 1940. Enter into the arena of this battle, in command of No 11 Group of the RAF. One, Keith Rodney Park (Decorated Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Rodney Park, GCB, KBE, MC & Bar, DFC). Park a New Zealander born in Thames New Zealand 15 June 1892. The area of defence by the No 11 Group was in the air over the South East England and London. Park. After the Battle of Britain, Park was moved as fighter command to training command. Later war operations saw Park in RAF command Malta and the Far East.

Not long after World War II , at the New Zealand Society's  annual London dinner, February 1947 Lord Tedder, head of the RAF on Park was to say: -

“ If ever any one man won the Battle of Britain, he did. I don’t believe it is realised how much that one man, with his leadership, his calm judgment and his skill, did to save not only this country, but the world.”

" Fast forward" to 2008 in England. An international campaign was initiated to see a permanent statue of Park in recognition of his work as commander of No. 11 Group during the Battle of Britain.

A temporary fibreglass statue was placed on the Fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, England  – significant with  history and art meeting – the empty  Fourth Plinth having a history of creativity and sculptures planned from 1841 to fill the empty space.

At the 70th Anniversary Battle of Britain commemorations on 15 September 2010, Waterloo Place - unveiled-  a permanent bronze statue of Park. Recognition of what could be said to be “ a forgotten hero.” Recognised for the combat and defence  in the skies,  of Park  and the 11th squadron, in the Battle of Britain seventy years prior.

" Fast forward " in 2019 to Park's hometown in Thames, New Zealand. On the 27 April 2019, a full military ceremony saw the life size bronze statue of Park unveiled in front of the Thames civic centre ( formerly the RSA building ) at Thames, New Zealand.

A phone call from my cousin Stewart in Australia, cemented this outing for us . Stewart's son Mark Whyte, a sculptor and artist, had been commissioned by the Hare family to  craft  a life size statue in bronze. This of Sir Keith Park which was made possible, with a bequest in her will, from Betty Hare. (This was our chance to also catch up with Mark and baby Cora.)  Also to meet with Jonathan Campbell who did the casting in bronze, of the Park life size statue with the artist and sculptor, Mark Whyte.

This bequest of $200,000 was left as Betty Hare felt that  Sir Keith Park was worthy of more recognition in his country New Zealand and birth place Thames, NZ. Sir Keith Park had played a major role in the Battle of Britain WWII, having been promoted to the rank of Air Vice Marshall. Park was said to be responsible for the fighter defence of London and South east England.

There were a number of speakers at the unveiling of the Park statue, along with a very large crowd watching the proceedings of this very memorable occasion.

Mark Whyte who usually specialises in  stone sculptures , is no stranger to bronze works. Prior to the Park life size statue at Thames NZ, Whyte  had been commissioned to do the twelve bronze busts of prominent Cantabrians. A mixed and diverse  bunch of contributions to Christchurch via business, culture, sport and the arts. The twelve bronze busts commissioned by the Local Heroes trust are of  Sir Don Beaven, Frank Dickson, Sir Richard Hadlee, Lady Diana Isaac Elsie Locke, Charles Luney, Margaret Mahy, Sir Tipene O’Regan, Sir Robertson (Bob) Stewart, William Sutton, Sir Angus Tait, Sir Miles Warren.

A  further search of the internet finds Napier New Zealand has another of Whyte's bronze sculptures - " A wave in time" on Emmerson Street - Sheila Williams and her dog Raven -  a reminder of the 1933 street carnival held to mark Napier recovery  from the 1931 Napier Earthquake.

Definitely beautiful creative art work by Mark Whyte and a tribute at Thames, NZ  to a " forgotten hero" of history - Sir Keith Rodney Park.

Now a final " fast forward" to 2022  and the Thames Airfield, NZ - now carrying the name - Sir Keith Park Memorial Airfield. The 82nd commemorations of the Battle of Britain reveal step one of another memorial to Park - the erection of a full- sized replica Hurrican Fighter and in the future a 2.3m bronze statue of Park in his flying uniform - a project of Sir Keith Park Memorial Inc

Mining Certificates Ohinemuri and Waihi Gold fields 1886 – 1915

Research Notes Background to the Certificates of the New Zealand  Gold Mining Industry

Introduction

Already there were a number of mining personnel who had previously worked in mining, both in Great Britain and other overseas countries. To mining in New Zealand they bought practical skills and knowledge and some, overseas qualifications and skills recognition. A number of these personnel had followed family forebears into the mining industry. ( eg the Cornish tin miners, Glaswegian chemists and engineers , County Cork & County Limerick engineers, surveyors and mine managers, Yorkshire and Welsh coal miners )

With the first European settler discovery of gold on the Coromandel Peninsula by Charles Ring in 1852, those who “flocked to the Coromandel” seeking a fortune found a different sort of mining required to that of many of the later South Island “gold rushes.” Not the alluvial mining where one could “pan for gold,” sluice and perhaps “strike it rich.” Instead it was auriferous “ hard rock mining” which required transport systems, machinery, equipment and skills. A knowledge of the underground “lay of the land” and this was so on the Coromandel Peninsula with its geological volcanic origins, fault lines and dykes.

The opening of the Thames Goldfield in 1867 saw rapidly developing industrial Mining in the many stampers and batteries constructed, to crush the quartz, along with the use of “that new fangled steam” to run the boilers of the large crushing plants. Tramways and railways  to move the quartz to the batteries for crushing.

The fatal Kuranui Boiler Explosion at Thames in 1874 saw New Zealand’s first piece of On Land health and safety legislation developed. This was the Machinery Act 1874 which carried provision for an Inspectorate, Inspection and formal certification and training of those operating the “new fangled” boilers. This was not new to the Marine Industry who had since 1866 in New Zealand such a system On Sea for those running the coastal steamers which plied to and from the Coromandel Peninsula. The first Colonial Chief Inspector of the Machinery Act – Joseph Nancarrow – had been Chief Inspector of Steam Machinery within the Marine Department for Inspection of Steamers.

For those operating the Boilers of the Coromandel Goldfields, after 1874 it was certification under the Machinery Act 1874, as in the Marine Industry, to run the “new-fangled” boilers. For those in underground it was mainly practical experience, those holding mining qualifications from overseas, Engineers and Surveyors and those who had “gained their trade” via the engineering foundries of overseas and in New Zealand for the machinery being made for the gold mining industry, the stonemasons and brick layers who built the kilns, etc.

Further Developments for the Mining Industry

In the 1880’s there were several developments in the New Zealand Mining industry that influenced “how things were done” including formal skills recognition within the industry. One of those was the opening of Thames School of Mines in 1885. Later Schools of Mines were opened at Coromandel, Waihi (1897), Karangahake (1901) and a branch at Waikino (1907).

The other development was Regulations containing provisions under the Mining Act 1886 for certification and competency of those holding positions in mining in New Zealand under the Mining Act 1886. Subsequent Mining Acts were passed, still with provisions for certification and competency. These were :-

  •      The Mining Act 1886
  •      Amendments to the Mining Act 1886
  •      The Mining Act 1891
  •      Amendment to the Mining Act 1991 ( 1894 No 52)
  •      The Mining Amendment Act 1896
  •      The Mining Act 1898
  •      Mining Act 1998 ( Amendments 1901 and 1902 )
  •      Mining Act 1908 ( Amendments 1910 )

The legislation certificates and training

In tangent with the certificates under the Mining Act for Mine Managers and Battery Superintendents, were also those under the Coal Mining Act – also certificates for Mine Managers and Battery Superintendents. A board headed the administration of the certification system and along with setting the Government Examination Papers, met to grant the certificates.

It could be said looking back in 2010, that this was one of the first attempts in New Zealand with formation towards a full Industry Training system ( in the mining industry).

The first provisions under the Mining Act 1886 outlined what in 2010 would be called RPL or Recognition of Prior Learning.

There was provision in 1886 for those who wished to hold a Mine Managers position but had had long practical experience, to apply in writing to the Board, outlining their previous practical experience and knowledge in order to gain a certificate without examination. Initially this step was required to be completed within 3 years from 1886. The Star ( 07/01/1888. P4) reported the following:

“ According to the provisions of the Mining Act of 1886, every mine manager must obtain a certificate of competence within three years from the passing of the Act. Holder's of English certificates will not be required to pass the New Zealand examination. “

Those with English Certificates had to produce proof of such.

For others it was the sitting of the Examinations – for Battery Superintendents and Mine Managers Second and First Class. The Schools of Mines offered a syllabus of subjects thought useful to mining along with lectures that gave to candidates sitting the certificate examinations. The Star (7 January 1888, P 4) reporting on the first examination that too place wrote: -

“first examination of candidates for certificates of competency as underground managers will -take place at the Thames in a few days, Mr Montgomery, of the School of Mines there, acting as supervisor -There are only two candidates.

Schools of Mines

The opening of the Thames School of Mines in 1885 was the beginning of a new and what was to become a recognised entity on the Coromandel Goldfields and within communities. Professor Black was enlisted to conduct a series of lectures in a “whistle stop tour” of the Goldfields. According to early writings , including Professor Black’s report to Government, these proved a “full house” success with miners on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Mr. Montgomery, the first director of the Thames School of Mines took training to the further corners of the Coromandel Peninsula (what in 2010 would be called Distance Learning). A length of time was spent in Karangahake, Waihi, Te Aroha and Coromandel. Lectures in the theoretical of mining were conducted.

According to accounts evening and Saturday classes were held.

It is of interest and significance that given there were few roads in to the Coromandel in those days and no railway in the 1880’s, the opportunity to attend the School of Mines lectures were well utilised, according to the writings of the era.

At the same time as the Thames School of Mines was consolidating and personnel in the mining industry were coming to grips with “this new fangled training and certification,” the gold mining industry was also undergoing rapid development and change with new technology as it moved into the next decade of the 1890s. New methods (wet processing ) to run the batteries and new scientific processes to extract that extra ounce of minerals from the quartz. With these came a set of new skills to master – electricity, chemistry and the new industrial processes of the mineral mining industry.

Waihi School of Mines

At an inaugural meeting held at Waihi in July 1896, an inaugural committee was elected to further the establishment of a School of Mines at Waihi. Committee members elected were “Messrs James Galbraith, E. G. Banks, W. H. Johnston, J. M. Wrigley, H. P. Barry, Geo. Colebrook, James H. Evans, T. Gilmour, H. H. Adams, Edward Quinn, Roach and Dr. Wright.”(Ohinemuri Gazette 01/07/1896) The following year in July 1897 Percy Gates Morgan was appointed as Director of the newly established Waihi School of Mines.

By 1902 the Waihi School of Mines was well established with the following recorded as Council Members – “ P.G. Morgan M.A.( Director), A.H.V Morgan M.A. ( Assistant Director), Thomas Gilmour ( President), Alfred H Benge, T Johns, F Stewart, W Morrison and R Morgan.

Karangahake School of Mines

The Karangahake School of Mines was said to have opened in 1900, Mr. MacDuff Director. The Ohinemuri Gazette, (25 /02/ 1903, P 2) following various speeches at the AGM, on the success of the Karangahake School of Mines and the work of the Director Mr. MacDuff, reported the following elected to the schools Council:

“Patron: E. G. B. Moss Esq., M.H.R. President: D. P. Mitchell Esq. Vice Presidents : F. A. Rich Esq., G. N. McGruer Esq., E. Cartwright Esq. Treasurer : R. D. Jones Esq. Council: Messrs W. Hutchison, C. Tresize, G. A. Chappell, Thomas Heron, T. G Vinson, and A. Tomlinson. “

According to the Ohinemuri Gazette ( 28/02/1908. p2 ) the following were elected to the committee for the coming year at the AGM of the Karangahake School of Mines:

“Patron, H. Poland, Esq, M.P; president, Mr Jno Nod veil; vice-presidents, Messrs G. N. McGruer, Deane, and Croucher; councillors, Messrs W. T. Wilson, A. S. Hill, J. Caisley, R. Inglis, R. R. Lloyd, D. Evitt, and Birks.”

Waikino School of Mines

Also reported at this meeting ( Ohinemuri Gazette 28/02/1908 p2 ) was a Branch School of Mines opened up at Waikino during 1907, Mr. Gibson in charge of the classes. Mr. O Banks conducting the drawing classes.
