The Sinai Campaign began about January 1915 and continued on into about October  1918. The Palestine Campaign began in 1917.

In January 1917, the New Zealand Herald reporting on railway construction of the Sinai operations, wrote:-
" Over 390 miles of railway have been constructed in
connection with the Sinai operations. There are important trade prospects for
this line after the war." ( New Zealand Herald 26/01/1917 p5)
The Sun wrote:-
" The main factor in the success in conquering the Sinai
desert was intense and unremitting work. Hundreds of miles of roads and
railways were built, and filters were installed, supplying 1,500,000 gallons of
water daily. Quantities of stone were transported from distant quarries, and Kantara
was transformed into an important railway and water terminus. Hundreds of miles
of barbed-wire entanglements, aerodromes, wireless stations and sanitation
works were necessary to make  the desert
habitable. The work of the Camel Corps, including Australian and New Zealand
units, was excellent throughout, and had done a great part of the work of
supplying the troops" (
Unremitting with the heat and the cold because of the high altitudes of the Sinai Desert.

The following are lists of those who lost their lives in the
Sinai Palestine campaigns, World War One - through disease, or through war
action. Since 2015  there has been continued research to identify those who lost their lives - this because little has been known about these
TCDC (Thames Coromandel District Council) has designated one of the
Memorial Forests on the Coromandel Peninsula to be near Tangitaroria Lane,
Pauanui. This is at the beginning of stage two of the Pauanui - Tairua
cycleway.
 The following lists
are to assist the process of knowing who lost their lives in the Sinai and
Palestine Campaigns during World War One: -

Thank you. It's ANZAC day 2021 and I'm currently in Sinai. I feel very nostalgic for the grandfather I never had a chance to meet: John Harding Tatham, Trooper, Wellington Mounted Rifles.
ReplyDeleteSandy - you are welcome. Sinai is a good place to be ANZAC day to remember your grandfather. For many years the Sinai Palestine Campaign was a forgotten part of New Zealand History - A time when our ANZACS ( Australia and New Zealand ) rode together for freedom. There were so many of those men. A tree for each one who lost their life, has been planted in the Sinai Palestine Memorial Forest at Pauanui.
